The Minturn Barn

The Minturn BarnIn September 2003 Beyond the Tree was given the opportunity to salvage the lumber from one of the historic Minturn barns. The barn was built around 1875 and was constructed of pine logs cut from the surrounding forests. The logs are notched and then stacked, alternating between the sides.

Using crow bars, a winch, and a whole lot of muscle Dan and Jim carefully disassembled the barn.

Carefully labeled for reconstruction, the logs were then piled for storage on a nearby strip of land.

After much deliberation Dan and Jim decided to use a Barn log to build a fireplace mantel. They flattened one side, fashioned corbels out of the notched ends of the log, and finished the wood to show off the natural weathered grain of the log.
